Recognition settings

Switch badges, points and streaks on for your agency, set what each activity is worth, and decide whether members are ranked against each other.

Recognition — badges, points, levels and streaks — is off for every agency until someone switches it on here. Open this page from Organization → Settings → Recognition. It holds the agency-wide rules only: the badges themselves are designed under Recognition → Badges (opens the admin console), and the level ladder under Recognition → Levels (opens the admin console). Those screens work whether or not recognition is on, so you can build your badges and tracks first and switch on when they are ready.

This page needs Manage settings, which is a different permission from Manage badges: someone who designs badges cannot necessarily switch the feature on. The database refuses a save from anyone who does not hold Manage settings.

Nothing on the page takes effect until you select Save at the bottom. The page then shows Saved.; if the save fails, the reason appears at the top of the page instead.

The master switch

The Recognition card holds one button: Turn recognition on while it is off, Recognition is on once it is on. Select it again to turn it off. While it is off, the Points and Leaderboard cards are faded and their controls disabled.

While recognition is off:

  • Nothing is awarded automatically, and no points are banked for activity.
  • The daily check skips your agency — the job that looks at streaks, time with the agency, reading and points totals.
  • Members' badge walls (their own Account settings → Badges) say that the agency has not switched recognition on, instead of showing badges, points or streaks.
  • The Recognition section of the dashboard is absent, and so is the Nominations card.

Turning it off deletes nothing. Badges, awards, points and levels are kept, and members see them again once you turn it back on.

Awarding by hand is not blocked while recognition is off. A badge granted on the Awards page is recorded and carries its points, but the member sees it only once recognition is on.

Points

What each activity is worth. Each field accepts 0 to 1000.

FieldDefault
Passing a quiz25
Completing an item10
Signing an acknowledgment5
Extending a streak5
  • Streaks pay for real work, once a day. Extending a streak is banked on a day the member's streak grows (their second consecutive day or later) and they pass a quiz, complete an item or sign an acknowledgment. Opening content, or a failed quiz attempt, keeps a streak alive but earns nothing — so the rule against paying for reading holds. A day is counted in UTC, the same day boundary the streak itself uses.
  • A quiz pays out once. Only a member's first pass of each quiz earns points. Retakes still record an attempt, so re-testing costs nothing and earns nothing.
  • Reading is deliberately not on the list. Opening an item never earns points — paying per view rewards skimming safety material rather than learning it.
  • Badges carry their own points, set on each badge in the badge designer. They are banked when the badge is awarded and taken back if it is revoked.
  • Changes apply from the moment you save. Points already banked are not recalculated.

Points totals are what the level ladder measures, alongside any badges a level requires.

Leaderboard

Off by default, and worth leaving off unless you have a reason: in workplace training a public individual ranking tends to demotivate everyone outside the top few and push people to bank points rather than learn.

Members see the leaderboard on their own badge wall (Account settings → Badges): ranked by points, for all time, the last 30 days or the last 7 days, and in By group mode for one of their own groups at a time. It lists the top 100. The operator app does not show it yet.

ModeWhat gets ranked
OffNothing. Members still see their own points, level and streak.
By groupThe members of one group, and only for someone who belongs to that group — team standing, not an agency-wide ranking.
Whole agencyEvery active member of the agency. Use with care in large agencies.

Members who have no points, and members who have taken themselves off the leaderboard, are never ranked.

When you choose a mode other than Off, a second button appears: Names shown or Names hidden. With names hidden, everyone other than the person looking appears as "Operator" followed by four characters and without a photo, so standing is visible without singling anyone out.

Members can opt out

While the leaderboard is on, each member's badge wall (Account settings → Badges) shows a Leaderboard row with Hide me or Show me. A hidden member does not appear on any board, in any period. Only the member can change it — there is no control for you to override their choice, and the database accepts the change from that member alone.
