Badge designer

Create or edit a badge — its details, artwork, tracks, the steps that earn it, whether it is awarded automatically or by hand, and when it expires.

The badge designer is one screen for everything about a single badge. Reach it from Recognition → Badges — New badge, or a badge's name or Edit button — or from the badge card on a quiz or guide (below).

What you can do hereNeeds
Open an existing badge of your agency's and read itManage badges or Award badges
Create a badge, or change anything on oneManage badges

Without Manage badges, every control is disabled and the save button is unavailable; opening New badge without it sends you back to the Badges list. The database refuses badge changes from anyone without Manage badges. A ROK catalog badge always opens read-only, whatever you hold — duplicate it on the Badges page to make a version you can change.

The top bar has Badges, which returns to the list without saving, and Create badge (or Save badge on an existing badge).

Starting from a quiz or guide

A quiz's editor carries a Badge on pass card and a guide's editor a Badge on completion card (see the content editor). For people who hold Manage badges, its Create a badge for this button opens this screen with the name set to the item's title and the first step already pointing at that item — Pass a quiz for the quiz, or Complete a guide for the guide. Nothing is created until you select Create badge.

Details

FieldWhat it does
NameUp to 80 characters.
SlugThe badge's short identifier: lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, unique within your agency. On a new badge it follows the name until you edit it; on an existing badge it stays put.
How it is earnedRequired, up to 500 characters. Shown to members, and published word for word on the badge's public page when a member shares it — write it in plain language.
Description (optional)Up to 500 characters. Also appears on the public page.
CategoryTraining, Skill, Safety, Milestone, Service or Community — the chip on the badge's card.
Points awardedBanked when the badge is awarded and taken back if it is revoked. Changing it later does not alter points already banked.
Skills (optional)Comma separated, up to 20. Published as skill alignments on the shared credential.

Artwork

Every change redraws the Preview on the right: one large rendering, plus the Wall and Inline sizes a badge is actually seen at. Play animation replays the chosen animation.

SectionControls
ShapeMedallion, Shield, Hex, Rosette, Star, Ribbon medal, Patch, Diamond or Chevron. Tier: None, Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum — picking a metal switches the fill to that metal and the border to its colour, so a ladder of badges stays consistent.
ColourFill: Solid, Gradient, Radial or Metal (metal takes its colours from the tier). Primary, plus Secondary for anything but solid, and Gradient angle for a gradient. Border: None, Solid, Double, Dotted, Rope, Notched or Laurel, with Border colour and Border weight.
IconLibrary: search ("rope", "water", "medical"…) and pick an icon, or the No icon tile. Upload SVG: Choose an SVG of up to 512 KB, such as an agency insignia. Then Icon colour and Icon size.
RibbonAdd a ribbon for a banner across the badge: Ribbon text (up to 18 characters, condensed to fit rather than clipped), Ribbon colour and Ribbon text colour.
AnimationNone, Shine, Pulse, Glow, Spinning ring or Flip in, and when it Plays: Always, When earned or On hover. "When earned" keeps badge walls calm and saves the movement for the moment it means something.

The fill and border swatches start with your agency's brand colours, then the ROK palette. Signal Red is reserved for critical states: it is never offered, and a save is refused if you pick it from the colour picker.

An uploaded SVG is rebuilt from its shapes alone: paths, circles, ellipses, rectangles, lines, polylines, polygons and groups, with their geometry, colour, stroke and transform settings. Text, embedded images, gradients, masks, styles, links, animation and scripts are dropped, so convert any lettering to outlines in your drawing tool first. Lines without a colour of their own are drawn in the icon colour. The same cleaning runs again every time a badge is drawn, so what the preview shows is exactly what members and anyone opening a shared badge see. A file over 512 KB, one with nothing drawable left after cleaning, or one still too detailed after cleaning is refused with a message under the button.

Groups

The badge groups (tracks) this badge belongs to: one button per group — your own, plus the active ROK catalog groups. Select a group to file the badge in it and select it again to take it out; a badge added from here goes to the end of the track. A catalog track that already contains the badge is shown as a chip ending "from the ROK catalog" and cannot be removed here. With no groups at all the card reads No groups yet.

How it is earned

An ordered list of steps plus a rule for combining them. Add a step adds one (up to 20); choose its kind from the Step list, and its plain-language description appears underneath. Changing a step's kind clears that step's settings. The handle on the left moves a step up one place; the bin removes it.

StepWhat it asks for
Pass a quizWhich item: one quiz, or Any with How many different quizzes. Minimum score (optional): blank uses the quiz's pass mark; a number also requires that score.
Complete a checklistOne checklist, or Any with How many.
Complete an itemOne item, or Any with How many.
Complete a guideGuide: every published item in it, including its sub-guides. A guide with no published items never awards.
Sign an acknowledgmentOne item, or Any with How many.
Read itemsHow many items — distinct items opened. Reading never earns points.
Reach a points totalHow many points.
Hold another badgePrerequisite badge: another of your agency's badges. This is how ladders are built.
Complete a badge groupBadge group, and How much of it: All of it, or Some of it with a number. This is a capstone.
Keep a streakHow many days of activity in a row.
Time with the agencyHow many days since the member joined.
Awarded by handNothing — the step is only ever met by a person granting the badge.

With two or more steps a Require row appears: All steps, Any one step, or Some steps with a number. With no steps the card reads "No steps yet. A badge with no steps can only be awarded by hand."

  • Holding is checked now. Hold another badge and Complete a badge group count only badges the member currently holds — a lapsed or revoked badge does not count. All of it means the group as it stands, so adding a badge to the track raises the bar for anyone not yet awarded.
  • A capstone cannot sit inside its own group. The group list leaves out the groups you have filed this badge under, and the database refuses the combination from either side.
  • Awarded by hand is never met automatically. Under All steps the badge is therefore only granted on the Awards page, and a manual award does not check the other steps — confirm them yourself before you award.

Awarding & currency

ControlWhat it does
AwardedAutomatically: the database awards it when the steps are met, and it cannot be granted by hand. By hand: only from the Awards page, never automatically. Either: both.
Times earnableBlank: a badge that never expires is earned once (unless that award is revoked), and one that expires can be earned again after each lapse. A number caps how many awards one member can hold over time; revoked awards do not count toward it. Nobody is awarded a badge they currently hold.
ExpiresNever; On a date (Expiry date — every award lapses that day); or After a period (Valid for (days), up to 3650, counted from each award). A line underneath previews when a badge earned today would lapse.
Active / InactiveAn inactive badge is never awarded.
Secret badge / Visible in the catalogA secret badge is still earnable but stays hidden from the member's badge wall until they earn it; inside a track it keeps its slot without its name.

The expiry date is stamped on each award when it is granted, so changing the expiry later affects new awards only. A lapsed badge stays in the member's history, shows as Lapsed on the Awards roster, and stops counting toward groups and levels — a member whose level required it drops back within a day. Re-earning it needs fresh evidence: a quiz pass, checklist, completion, acknowledgment or read recorded after the previous award. Steps that measure standing — points, streak, time with the agency, holding badges — are judged as they are at the time.

Saving

Create badge or Save badge checks the badge first. Problems are listed in a red box at the top — for example a missing name or criteria, a slug already in use, an automatic badge with no steps, a step missing its quiz, guide, badge, group or number, or an expiry with no date. Once it passes, the artwork is rendered and stored, the badge and its steps are saved, then its groups. You see Badge created. or Badge saved. and return to the list. If the groups alone fail, the message says the badge was saved but its groups were not.

Saving does not re-check anyone. Members are evaluated against the new steps at their next qualifying activity; badges built on streaks, time with the agency or reading are checked once a day for members active in the last 45 days.

If a badge cannot be loaded the page says so in red — That badge no longer exists. when it has been deleted.
