Tags

Curate your agency's content tags — see how often each is used, add, rename, merge duplicates, delete, and clear out unused tags.

Tags are free-form labels on content. Authors create them as they write, in the tag field of the editor, and apply them in bulk from All content. This page is where they are curated: open it from the sidebar, Content → Tags. Older links to /settings/tags land here too.

Who can use it

The page needs Manage taxonomy. Without it, Tags is missing from the sidebar and opening the address sends you back to the dashboard. Renaming, merging and deleting tags are refused by the database for anyone without Manage taxonomy.

People with Edit content can still create a new tag while editing an item, and add or remove tags on content. They cannot rename, merge or delete tags.

Add a tag

Type a name in New tag and select Add tag (or press Enter). The tag joins the list with a count of 0 and is offered to authors in the editor straight away. A name that already exists exactly is refused, and the reason appears under the list.

The tag list

Tags are listed alphabetically. Each row shows the name, a count of the items using it (drafts and items in review included), and three buttons: Rename, Merge into… and Delete. With no tags at all, the list reads "No tags yet."

Rename

Select the pencil to open Rename tag. As it says, every item tagged with the old name keeps the tag under its new name, so nothing has to be re-tagged. Select Rename to save.

If the new name matches another tag — ignoring capitals — the dialog stops you: "A tag called “…” already exists. Use Merge into… on this tag instead". Two tags meaning the same thing should be merged, not given the same name.

Merge into…

Select the merge icon on the tag you want to get rid of, then choose the tag to keep from the list. What happens:

  • Every item carrying the first tag now carries the kept tag. An item that already had both ends up with the kept tag once.
  • The first tag is deleted.

The merge runs the moment you choose the target. There is no confirmation step. The button is disabled when there are fewer than two tags.

Delete

Select the bin and confirm. If the tag is in use, the confirmation says how many items use it and that those links will be removed. The items themselves are not changed in any other way — they just lose that tag.

Delete unused

Delete unused (N) at the top removes every tag with a count of 0 in one go, after you confirm "Tags not attached to any content will be removed." It is disabled when there are none.

What else a tag change affects

  • Publish requirements. If your agency requires at least one tag before publishing (set in Settings → Publish requirements (opens the admin console)), deleting the only tag on an item makes it fail that check the next time someone publishes it. Merging never leaves an item untagged.
  • Merges and deletions cannot be undone. To reverse one, re-create the tag and re-apply it to the items.
  • Library imports do not bring tags with them, so imported drafts arrive untagged.
